Abstract
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is defined as an abnormally high ovarian response to hormonal stimulation. It is an iatrogenic complication caused by use and abuse in the treatment of infertility, mainly of the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation used in assisted reproduction techniques, although it may also occur in the treatment of ovulation induction, and even in the course of a spontaneous pregnancy. There are different situations that may predispose to this syndrome; risk factors include: age, overweight, polycystic ovary syndrome, number of follicles and increased serum estradiol concentrations. Once established the condition, it is necessary to classify it to decide the type of treatment. The initial management consists on preventing the emergence of the syndrome by timely detecting risk factors that can induce it, in case that despite prevention measures to develop the syndrome, it will be necessary to treat it in accordance to the degree of ovarian hyperstimulation that has been established. This article examines the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, analyzing its pathophysiology, clinical picture, classification, diagnosis and treatment.
Key words: ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, assisted reproduction.
