Impact of smoking on female and male fertility.

El tabaquismo tiene un efecto nocivo en la salud causando daño multisistémico y aumentando el riesgo de distintas enfermedades. La fertilidad es una de las funciones biológicas que puede verse afectada; sin embargo, los mecanismos subyacentes de este problema siguen sin estar claros, por lo que se han realizado diversos estudios para tratar de entender los mecanismos por los que se afecta el sistema reproductivo mediante el tabaquismo. El objetivo de este artículo es proporcionar una revisión sistemática general de la bibliografía disponible de la relación entre el tabaquismo y su efecto en la fertilidad femenina y masculina. Se realizó una búsqueda electrónica utilizando las siguientes bases de datos: PubMed, ScienceDirect y Google Scholar. Se utilizaron los siguientes términos, palabras y sus combinaciones para realizar la búsqueda: Smoking, female fertility, male fertility, reproductive function, assisted reproduction. El tabaquismo tiene un efecto negativo en la fertilidad femenina y masculina. Además, también se ha demostrado que afecta los resultados de los tratamientos de reproducción asistida. En consecuencia, debe recomendarse a todas las parejas en edad reproductiva suspender el hábito del tabaco.

Smoking has a deleterious effect on health increasing the risk of different diseases. Fertility is one of the biological functions that can be affected; however, the underlying mechanisms of this problem remain unclear. Therefore, researchers have been trying to elucidate the role and different mechanisms by which smoking can be associated with difficulty to conceive. The objective of this paper is to provide a general systematic review of the available literature on the relationship between smoking and its impact on female and male fertility. An electronic search was carried out using the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. The following terms, words and their combinations were used to perform the search: Smoking, female fertility, male fertility, reproductive function, assisted reproduction. Smoking has a negative impact on female and male fertility. In addition, it has also been shown to affect the outcomes of assisted reproduction treatments. Consequently, all couples of reproductive age should be advised to discontinue smoking.
